Why Would a Genetic Test Be Suggested For My Child?

As a mother or father, you want what's best for your child and their health - it's simply part of being a parent. As such, when they experience health, or developmental concerns arise, it may be suggested that genetic testing be carried out. That said, it’s only in certain circumstances that this would be a suggested course of action.

This is something we look at in this article as we examine what may lead to genetic testing being suggested for your child.

Which Conditions May Benefit From Genetic Testing?

There are several situations in which a paediatrician might recommend that your child undergoes genetic testing. There are a very large number of genetic tests and depending on the skills of the investigating doctor, these may be tailored to assist evaluation in some or any of the following:

  • A delay in the development of cognitive, speech or motor function

  • Structural birth defect (e.g. Cleft lip/palate or heart valve issues)

  • Single organ defects or anomalies (major & minor)

  • Behavioural issues

  • Chronic digestive problems

  • Neuromuscular problems

  • Heart rhythm issues

  • Seizures

  • Feeding disorders

In addition to the above, some children may also get referred for genetic testing when they don't have an obvious problem. In these cases, it's suggested in the event of a suspected genetic condition in the family.

These genetic conditions include:

  • Familial history of genetic conditions (like congenital heart disease)

  • Suspected or known genetic syndromes in another family member

  • Autism or pervasive developmental delay

  • Chromosomal disorders

  • Hereditary cancer syndromes

Preconception and prenatal counselling can be provided to address the concerns of those wishing to have a baby when there is a family history of a genetic disorder.
