Background & Expertise
Willie Reardon read Medicine at University College Dublin, graduating with an honours degree. Following basic training in Dublin teaching hospitals and associated centres he embarked on specialist training in clinical genetics at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in 1988. He completed his doctoral thesis while there, the degree of MD being awarded in 1991.
Thereafter he spent a year working at the internationally acclaimed centre for inherited neuromuscular diseases in Cardiff. He was appointed a Consultant to the Great Ormond Street Clinical Genetics Unit in 1995. He returned to work in Dublin in 1999, taking the post of Consultant Clinical Geneticist at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital. More recently he has worked as Visiting Professor of Paediatric Genetics at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, before returning to Dublin.
Dr. Reardon was Clinical Lead in Genetics & Head of Department of Clinical Genetics at Children's Health Ireland, Crumlin. He led a department comprising Consultants, Genetic Counsellors, Scientists and Administrative staff, seeing over 3000 patients a year and undertaking almost 10,000 laboratory investigations and analyses. Under his guidance and leadership, the Laboratory in Crumlin achieved international accreditation credentials in 2021.
Dr. Reardon has been the Consulting Clinical Geneticist to the National Maternity Hospital since 2001 and in this capacity sees many patients with genetic forms of infertility, patients during pregnancy where there is a potential fetal malformation or chromosomal problem, patients who have experienced stillbirth, and also sees newborn infants with suspected genetic conditions.
Dr Reardon has published 2 highly rated textbooks with Oxford University Press, chapters relating to Clinical Genetics practice in several leading textbooks, in excess of 250 peer reviewed papers in medical journals as well as speaking at international conferences on innumerable occasions. Dr Reardon is regularly consulted on issues relating to practices in clinical genetics, both as an expert opinion and in an advisory capacity. He is a member of several international professional bodies, including the British Society of Genomic Medicine, the Clinical Genetics Society, the American Society of Human Genetics and has served on the Editorial Board of several international journals in his field.
Dr Reardon has acted as a medical expert witness in over 800 cases in Britian, Ireland, Austrialia, USA and Hong Kong.
