What is Genetic Counselling?

At Genetics.ie, we offer a range of different genetics testing services, to allow people to understand and manage genetic disorders they or their families may have. As part of these services, we offer what’s known as genetic counselling, but what exactly does that mean?

Basically, genetic counselling refers to providing genetic information, direction as to services and support - something that allows them to make informed decisions about their health - both when the information is positive and negative. However, counselling is always based upon a secure genetic diagnosis.

Relaying Genetic Testing Results

The specialist advice and support provided to individuals and their families comes from data that’s gleaned from genetic testing. The Geneticist will then relay this information, clarifying health risks and empowering patients to factor this new knowledge into their lives.

This can involve emotionally difficult moments, with the Geneticist, as patients adjust to what genetic testing has uncovered. What you can expect is that your very experienced Geneticist will offer reassurance and guidance about the next steps.

Who Might Need Genetic Counselling?

There are many reasons why you might benefit from counselling. Common situations we deal with at www.genetics.ie include:

  • Your doctor suspects you may have a genetics-related diagnosis

  • A family member has a genetics-related diagnosis

  • A member of your close family has a particular form of cancer that may be inherited

  • Either yourself or your partner may have a health condition that could possibly be passed to your children

  • Newborn screening tests show that a baby has a genetic mutation previously unsuspected in the family

Genetic counselling can be helpful to anyone having a baby or planning to start a family, as it will determine the risk of any potentially hereditary conditions that could affect your child’s health.
